Yesterday she had invited me and told me that her husband had arranged for a driver, but I wasn’t able to understand where we were going. All that I could determine was that I was supposed to wear long pants, long sleeved shirt and closed toe “football” shoes. When she came to pick me up I discovered that her husband was able to arrange use of a Land cruiser (seems to be the standard issue government vehicle). Side note: If you would see the roads here you would understand the Land cruiser’s necessity. There are no paved roads in Mtwara. Several main roads are fairly smooth (packed clay), but all side roads are pocked with deep rivets and holes created by flash foods- difficult, if not impossible to navigate with a low carriage vehicle. Traveling with Rose, the driver and I is a young gentleman, Hamis, who Rose has invited to help with directions. Rose confessed that she generally knows the way, but may need help finding the exact location. She explained that Hamis used to be her houseboy, but he is now married with two children and has a business – I don’t know what kind of business, something to do with construction. She says he gets what ever kind of work that he can. A short distance outside of the city we turned off the main road and Rose explained that we were traveling
